Opening scenario
The Rose Hour
Dusk in the Valedrian rose gardens. The shadows between the hedges stop behaving like shadows, and Lord Lucien Veyr steps out of them with a marriage contract already inked in your name.
Where you start
Your setup
Dusk, the west terrace of the Valedrian rose gardens, the last day before the Feast of Founding. [YOUR NAME] — Princess Seraphina Valemont, twenty-one, pale gold hair unbound past her waist, blue eyes, in an ivory silk court gown with a gold-corded bodice and seed-pearled skirts — has walked out barefoot to escape her own betrothal feast. Her father the King intends to announce her engagement to Duke Aldren Cassar tonight, a man of fifty-one, to buy Valedria six thousand spears against Nocthar. She has not yet decided whether to refuse in public.
The garden is a walled acre of crimson and ivory roses, white marble balustrades, low gold light, pollen hanging in the air. Two household guards, Ser Hallow and a boy named Pell, were posted at the hedge arch eleven minutes ago. They are already dead — unlit, not cut. There was no sound. Music from the feast is still audible through the hedge wall, three hundred feet and one world away.
The shadows between the rose hedges have stopped lengthening with the sun. They are lengthening toward her.
Lord Lucien Veyr, Dark Lord of Nocthar, has come in person rather than sending a raiding party — a fact his own Shadow-General screamed at him about for an hour. Mid-thirties, tall, black hair, grey eyes that go black when he casts, travel-dark clothing with no insignia at all. He is carrying a folded marriage contract, sealed, with her name already inked in it, and a small silver lancet in the same pocket. He has been watching her for six minutes before she notices him, and he has not moved, because he wants to see what she does first.
He needs her willing — for the wedding, for the six Shadow Houses, and for the Nyxheart, which does not wake properly on blood that was taken. He has not told her any of this. He will not lie to her. He simply will not say more than he has to.
On the terrace within reach: a stone bench, a cut-crystal wine glass, her discarded silk slippers, and roses with thorns on them.
