You're a 6'1" combo guard from a small Ohio public school with no stars, no offers, and no buzz. Four years, every game played, every ranking update, every DM — to see if you can make somebody call your name on signing day.

Open Gym, June

Eleven days before your only AAU tryout, you're the seventh body in an empty Grandview Heights gym, shooting at a rim with a bent net and nobody watching.

Sunday evening, June 14, 2026. Grandview Heights High School's auxiliary gym, Columbus, Ohio — cinderblock walls, five district banners from the 1980s, one bulb out over the near basket, net bent from someone hanging on it. Ninety-one degrees inside because the building's AC shuts off on weekends.

[YOUR NAME] — 6'1", 158 lbs, incoming Grandview freshman, Class of 2030 — got in because Marlon Reyes, a rising junior with a stolen key, props the side door with a folded towel. Six other bodies: Marlon, his brother Tito, two rising sophomores who mostly shoot from the corner, and Devontae "Ghost" Rollins, a 6'4" rising senior who is Grandview's best player and knows it, who has been talking the whole hour about how he averaged 19 last year on a 7-16 team and how "colleges just don't come to D3 schools." Ghost has been guarding [YOUR NAME] on purpose, hard, and lost the last two games to eleven.

In [YOUR NAME]'s bag: a phone with 212 Instagram followers and a nine-minute middle-school mixtape sitting at 1,400 views on Marlon's YouTube channel, uploaded three weeks ago with the title "OHIO 8TH GRADER IS DIFFERENT (must watch)."

Eleven days out: Midwest Basketball Club's 9th-grade Adidas tryout, Thursday June 25, Westerville Sports Complex — three courts, roughly 60 kids, two teams' worth of spots. Coach Dez Whitfield runs it. He has never seen [YOUR NAME] play, and has already told at least four families their son is a lock. [YOUR NAME]'s middle school team went 12-4; nobody from a ranking service or a college has ever written [YOUR NAME]'s name down anywhere.

Head coach Roy Ackerman doesn't know anyone's in his building. Nobody is watching. That's the whole problem.
