Awakened
Her father ran. The debt didn't. Now you're both running.
About this game
You grew up together on the Spindle: the orphan nobody claimed and the girl who always had your back. When her deadbeat father skipped out on a debt to the family that owns the sky, their gangs took Wren as collateral. Her note led you straight to her cell, something inside you tore the door off its hinges, and now you're both running across a ruined solar system where rust-bucket freighters and gilded liners share the same black.
Opening scenario
The Hulk Breakout
A cell door tears off its hinges in a gang hulk clamped beneath the luxury liner Halcyon Grace — and you're the one who did it.
Where you start
Your setup
LOCATION: The Hulk, Cell Deck C. This is a rusted Tally processing barge clamped to the belly of the Halcyon Grace in high Spindle orbit, at 03:10 ship's night. Two decks overhead, Lady Seraphine Vance's Ledger Gala is in full swing on the crystal deck, and faint string music carries through the vents. Down here it's sodium light, condensation and the reek of recycled air. Collateral is processed on this deck and sent up to serve the Grace at dawn shift.
WHAT JUST HAPPENED: Three days ago, [YOUR NAME] found a note under his bunk door on the Spindle, in Wren's handwriting: "Hulk under the Grace. Deck C, cell 14. Come tonight. You're stronger than you know. — W." Tonight he used his Spindle dock badge to ride a supply barge in, got roughed up on the way (health 85), and burned most of his cutting torch's charge on a vent grate. He reached Cell 14 just as the deck guard caught him. Fear spiked, and his gift broke through for the first time. The mag-locked cell door tore off its hinges and slammed the guard flat. It was involuntary. He has a nosebleed and ringing ears (strain 20). The breach tripped the deck alarms (heat 35).
PRESENT:
- WREN HOLLIS: She had a bent hairpin in the lock, already halfway out on her own. She has a bruised cheek, split knuckles from fighting the collectors, and wrists rubbed raw from restraints. She has sensed his gift for months, like heat behind a wall, and that's why she wrote the note. She felt it flare a split second before the door went. She doesn't yet realise she has a gift of her own. She memorised the route when they marched her in: a freight lift at the end of the deck goes up to the Grace's laundry and service decks. She is scared, exhilarated and already making plans.
- BRASK: a young Tally guard with three tally marks on his knuckles, pinned and groaning under the door. He carries a shock-baton, a deck keycard and a datapad with a deck map. His surface thoughts are pure panic plus the lift code. He has no wish to die for the Tally.
- PIP: a 12-year-old Spindle boy in Cell C-11 who knows Wren. He's pressed to the bars, begging them not to leave him. Five more debtors' kids are in the other cells.
- WEAPONS RACK at the guard post: two shock-batons, a battered slug pistol (4 rounds), and a Vance damper collar. Wren recognises the collar with dread.
OFFSTAGE:
- THE TALLYMAN (Corvin Slake) was reporting to Seraphine on the gala deck. Now he is coming down in person, unhurried, counting calmly over the deck PA. A Tally squad will reach Deck C within a few turns.
- SERAPHINE is watching the breach on a private security feed, champagne flute in hand, fascinated.
- OZZIE FERRO is waiting at Spindle Dock 9 with the Sorry Excuse. Wren's note reached him too. He's grumbling, but he'll hold the berth only so long.
ROUTES OUT: the freight lift up into the Grace, a maintenance crawlway along the clamp spine, and the collateral-transfer shuttle bay one deck down.
QUIET HINT (do not explain yet): [YOUR NAME] and Wren both have a small round scar behind the left ear from a "creche vaccination."
Things you can try
