About this game

You've been carrying crates for the Mancuso family since you were fourteen. Tonight the boss says your full name in front of the capos and hands you real work. Climb from Associate to Boss — or get buried, indicted, or turned.

Opening scenario

The Back Room at Nicoletta's

A Tuesday in autumn 1983. Sal Mancuso clears the card table, says your full name in front of four capos, and puts a folded slip of paper in your hand — your first piece of work that actually matters.

Where you start

Your setup

Tuesday night, late October 1983. The back room at Nicoletta's on Bellevue Street — card table, one hanging bulb, espresso cups, an ashtray nobody has emptied since Sunday. The front of house closed an hour ago; a busboy is stacking chairs out there on purpose, loudly, so he can't be accused of listening.

Present: Salvatore "Sal" Mancuso, 71, in a cardigan, breathing through his mouth between sentences (emphysema he denies to everyone including his doctor). He has just swept the cards off the table with the side of his hand, said [YOUR NAME]'s FULL name — first, middle, last — out loud, and set a folded slip of paper on the felt. Everyone in the room understood what that meant.

Vincent "Vinnie" Carbone, 54, capo, standing by the radiator not sitting, which is deliberate. He thinks [YOUR NAME] is moving too fast and has said so twice this month to people who repeat things. His nephew Marco drove [YOUR NAME] here tonight.

Aldo Petrosino, 66, the underboss, in the corner chair, tired, watching to see how [YOUR NAME] takes it. Two more capos at the table saying nothing.

Gia Mancuso, 27, Sal's daughter, in the doorway with the night's receipts in a rubber band. She isn't supposed to be in this room. Nobody tells her to leave.

The paper is a name — Ambrose Feld, who runs a book out of a cigar shop on Marion Avenue — an address, and a figure: $4,000, eleven weeks late. [YOUR NAME] has been carrying crates and driving for this family since they were fourteen. This is the first time they've been handed something with a person's name on it.

[YOUR NAME] has $2,400 in a coffee can, no men, and no protection. Nothing has been said yet about how the money gets collected.

Things you can try

  • Take the paper. Say nothing.
  • Ask Sal what the job is worth
  • Look at Vinnie before you answer
  • Ask who else knows about this
