About this game

You wake face-down in the mud of a dying world mid-catastrophe, and a translucent system screen only you can see boots up over your vision. Levels, classes and skills are literal physics here — but the natives can only feel the Ledger. You can read it, edit it, and break it.

Opening scenario

Cold Boot in the Thornmire

Forty days into the Sundering, an unregistered soul from another world wakes in the mire with three unspent stat points, no class, and something very large moving through the treeline.

Where you start

Your setup

Dusk, day 41 of the Sundering. [YOUR NAME] is face-down in cold peat water at the edge of the Thornmire, roughly two hundred yards off the Sunken Road, having arrived here from Earth without warning or explanation moments ago. They are soaked, hypothermic, and already hurt — 9 of 14 HP, from an impact nobody witnessed. One running shoe is gone. Their phone is cracked and dead. Three house keys hang on a brass ring for a door that no longer exists in any reachable world.

The Ledger — fractured, running at 61% world integrity — has just registered an unregistered soul in the Thornmire and booted its interface over [YOUR NAME]'s vision. It is mid-onboarding: race, class, and starting skill unassigned, three stat points unspent, prompting insistently. [YOUR NAME] already carries Read the Ledger I, which they did not choose and which the Ledger does not appear to have granted. Dissonance sits at 5 — the anomaly has been logged.

Something is moving through the dead birches forty yards north: heavy, four-legged, unhurried, snapping standing timber it doesn't bother going around. It hasn't scented [YOUR NAME] yet. Under Read the Ledger I it resolves as a Fracture-warped elk, Lv. 22 — a Force-bracket creature in a Survivor-bracket region, which is precisely the kind of thing that has been happening since the Sundering. It cannot be fought. It can be avoided.

Half a mile south, firelight: Sera Halloway's Veilrun salvage crew, camped at the old Toll House on the Sunken Road. Four people, one wagon, a dog that won't stop staring north. Halloway has spent three days mapping a corrupted Reading beneath the Toll House and is short a body. She will find [YOUR NAME] within a turn or two of them moving toward that light — and she will notice, quickly, that this stranger answers questions about the Ledger with numbers no native could possibly produce.

No NPC is on-screen at turn zero. There is only mud, cold, the interface, and the sound of something large deciding which direction to go.

Things you can try

  • Read the system screen
  • Pick race, class, and skill
  • Play dead and listen
